Fredrik Meltzer (1779 - 1855) designed the flag of Norway. He represented the city of Bergen in the Norwegian parliament throughout several periods. It was in fact his 12 year old son Gerhard who made the first draft of the flag, from the ideas of his father.

A distinctive Norwegian flag was designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer, a member of the parliament (Storting).
At the dissolution of the union in 1905, the badge was removed from the state and war flag as well.
Fredrik Meltzer felt that the flag should have a Christian cross in it, similar to those of other Nordic countries (Sweden and Denmark).
