Breakfast helps to replenish blood glucose levels, which is important since the brain itself has no reserves of glucose, its main energy source, and constantly must be replenished.
In the high-fiber "balanced" breakfast, 59 percent of calories were supplied by carbohydrates and roughly 20 percent of calories were supplied by protein and fat each.
The nutritional benefits of breakfast cereals also were shown in a recent survey of more than 4,000 households by General Mills, Inc. Adults who ate cereal for breakfast consumed an average of 10 percent fewer calories than those who selected other breakfast foods, with only 20 percent of their calories coming from fat.
Children are continuously growing and changing every day, and a nutritious breakfast provides the sugar, starch, protein, and fat - elements necessary for children to ensure a sustained release of energy and a delayed onset of hunger.
Eating breakfast also improves the intake of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, especially iron and vitamin C. Studies have shown that eating breakfast gives children the nutritional boost they need to get the learning process going - to stimulate learning - and there are other benefits as well.
The evidence is clear - eating breakfast, whether it's eaten at home or at school - and whether it's pancakes, cereal, fruit, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or leftovers from the night before - leads to better health, learning, and behavior - all keys to success at school - and in life.
