Freedom Press is an independent publishing company that specializes in health and environmental titles and is based in Topanga Canyon, a rural area near Los Angeles. Freedom Press was founded in 1997 by David Steinman, an environmental health advocate, journalist and author. In 2005, Freedom Press shifted its focus from predominantly health to a shared focus on health and the environment. In 2006, Freedom Press began to promote and manage the "Green Patriot" brand, which emphasizes the positive effect of environmentalism on national security, as introduced in David Steinman’s book Safe Trip to Eden: Ten Steps to Save Planet Earth from the Global Warming Meltdown (Thunder's Mouth Press, 2007). Periodicals

In 1997, Freedom Press began to publish the monthly The Doctors’ Prescription for Healthy Living magazine, which covers a variety of topics on natural and alternative medicine with an emphasis on scientific research. The magazine is distributed to health foods stores and natural health practitioners nationwide. In 2006, the magazine expanded its distribution to bookstores and newsstands, as well.


In 2002, Freedom Press published the monthly newspaper The Californian which focused on political, environmental and health news, and was discontinued after several issues. In 2005, Freedom Press published Natural Health Retailer, a magazine for health food store owners and management, which ran for approximately one year.
