Freehold Bypass

Route 33 once ran through the heart of Freehold, but congestion led to the study of a new freeway alignment. After several years, the freeway was downsized to merely a bypass of Freehold. The Township Committee governs Freehold Township. It is the oldest form of government in New Jersey and is considered to be the most responsive to the needs of its citizens. Freehold Township is governed by five Committee persons, each of whom is elected for a three-year staggered term. At the beginning of each year, the Committee members elect one of their members to serve as Mayor and one as Deputy Mayor for that year.

Kozloski Road Tragedy

On Wednesday, January 10, 2007, four people were killed and one person was left in critical condition when three high school students driving in a Cadillac CTS collided head-on with a Dodge Caravan which was being used as a school transportation vehicle in a major accident on a new extension of Kozloski Road between Dutch Lane Rd and CR-537. The accident gained major regional attention and made the front pages of state newspapers. It was the top headline of major New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia news outlets. The high school students who were pronounced dead at the scene, were identified as 17-year-old Michael Dragonetti, 17-year-old James Warnock, and 16-year-old Andrew Lundy. The students were well known throughout the town and attended nearby Freehold Borough High School. They had been dismissed from school just ten minutes earlier. In the Dodge Caravan, driver Ruth A. MacArthur, 68, of Old Bridge, New Jersey was killed and an unidentified 13-year-old boy was seriously injured. Since speed was said to have been a factor, the accident placed pressure on state police departments to enforce New Jersey provisional drivers license laws and increased awareness on the importance of driver education programs in state high schools. It also left many state residents demanding that the state implement more restrictions on young drivers and raise the eligible driving age which is currently 17 for those born prior to 1992 and 18 for those born after. This tragedy, which took place one week after the meteorite crash, once again put Freehold Township in the headlines and brought perhaps more media attention to the suburban town than it had ever known.
