Freeland is a borough located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, 18 miles (29 km) south of Wilkes Barre, and 10 miles northeast of Hazleton. in an agricultural region. Coal-mining had been a chief industry years ago at the turn of the century when the population numbered 5,254 in 1900. In 1910, 6,197 people lived there, and in 1940, 6,593 people lived in Freeland. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,643.
