Freeport is a village located in Barry County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 444.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 444 people, 161 households, and 122 families residing in the village. The population density is 222.6/km² (575.8/mi²). There are 167 housing units at an average density of 83.7/km² (216.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 92.57% White, 2.03% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.80% from other races, and 3.15% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 161 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the village the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $42,708, and the median income for a family is $46,667. Males have a median income of $35,000 versus $25,156 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,684. 0.7% of the population and 0.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Freeport is located right on the center of the northern border of Barry County and is situated on the picturesque Coldwater River which winds its way into the Thornapple River a few miles to the southeast.
The area surrounding the town is a great place to go for a color tour or a Sunday drive, with its winding roads, hills and mixture of forested areas and farms.
Freeport was founded in the mid-1800Â’s by brothers Michael and Samuel Roush who moved here from Freeport, Ohio, naming it after their home town.
