Freex was a short-lived comic book series from Malibu Comics. Created By Gerard Jones and Ben Herrera, it concerned a team of teenage superheroes in the Ultraverse. In comic books, first appearance refers to the date or issue of a characters first appearance. ... The Ultraverse was the name given to a comic book imprint published by Malibu Comics. ...

The group that would come to call themselves the Freex were apparently created when a group of newborn infants were injected with a substance called "wetware", a mix of mutated DNA and nanotechnology that had been created by the advanced but isolated underground society called the Fire People. The nurse who injected these children would later go on to become the superhero Contrary, who utilized other Fire People technology to assist and organize Ultraforce. The general structure of a section of DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid — usually in the form of a double helix — that contains the genetic instructions or genocode monitoring the biological development of all cellular forms of life, and many viruses. ... The members, searching for others like themselves, began to contact each other, and came together, but before they had time to do more than introduce themselves, they were already being chased, exploited, hunted, and were wanted by the police. This would set the tone for most of their exploits to come.

The members of the group were:

Anything (Lewis Phillips) - Shapeshifter. Despite his name, he can only crudely reshape his body, and cannot change color or imitate complex shapes. He can expand his body to great size.

Pressure (Valerie Sharp) - Able to convert her sweat into steam or even superheated plasma. "Pressure" describes her personality as well as her powers; she has been abused and manipulated so often, that her frustration and rage often make her extremely short-tempered and violent. A Plasma lamp, illustrating some of the more complex phenomena of a plasma, including filamentation A solar coronal mass ejection blasts plasma throughout the solar system. ...

Sweetface (Angela Salazar) - most of her body below the neck is covered with coils of strong tendrils which she can mentally control. Angela is horrified at what her body has turned into. She was once proud of her looks, but now, perhaps more than any other on the team, she feels like a freak.

Cayman (Evan Murayama) - Joined the team in Freex # 11. Super-strong with scaly armored skin and big claws, he can assume human form but only briefly and with great effort. Intelligent and calm, he is surprisingly well-adjusted for a big lizard-monster.

Boomboy (Ray Golic) - A super-strong stone giant, Ray was raised in a basement because his parents were ashamed of their mutated son. As a result he is very poorly educated (the book's title uses his spelling) and naive, but has a very active imagination, since that's frequently all he had. He is very close to the other Freex, since they are the only people he's ever spent much time with.

Plug (Michael Rafani) - Plug is able to transform himself into pure electrical energy. In this form he can enter and control any electronic devices. He was killed in Freex #15, saving Cayman from the ultra-killer Rafferty. In Freex # 17, Plug was replaced by AJ. Rafferty was a fictional assassin from the Malibu Comics Ultraverse imprint. ...

AJ - AJ can project an energy form from his body.

Trivia

After the team returned from a time travel adventure, the deceased team leader Plug was simply forgotten, and with no explanation, AJ was in his place. The team did not notice the difference (similar to the two Darrens on Bewitched). Since the title was cancelled one issue later, the change was neither explained or resolved. Time travel is a concept that has long fascinated humanity—whether it is Merlin experiencing time backwards, or religious traditions like Mohammeds trip to Jerusalem and ascent to heaven, returning before a glass knocked over had spilt its contents. ... Bewitched was an American situation comedy starring actress Elizabeth Montgomery, broadcast on ABC from 1964 to 1972. ...
