the 26-gun frigateBelle Poule (1765), famous for her duel against the English frigate HMS Arethusa on the 17 June 1778, which was the beginning of French interventions in the American war of Independance. She was captured by the English in 1780.
the 40-gun frigate Belle Poule(1802-1806) which raided commerce in the Indian Ocean.
the 60-gun frigate Belle Poule (1828-1888), famous for bringing back the ashes of Napoléon from Saint Helena to France in 1840. She was under command of François d'Orléans, prince of Joinville, and had been painted black for the mission.
She was one of the first ships to be built in a covered shipyard, which allowed the builders to delay construction while the political and financial circumstances were not favourable.
In 1844, Joinville, then vice-admiral, was sent to Morocco to support the action of General Bugeaud in Algeria, with the Suffren, the Jemmapes, the Triton, and the frigateBellePoule.
