Frenchay is a suburb of Bristol, England, to the north east of the city, but located mainly in South Gloucestershire and the Civil Parish of Winterbourne. Frenchay Hospital, greatly expanded during World War II for the US Army, treated many wounded soldiers returning from the D-Day landings in Normandy. Frenchay is still one of the Bristol's major hospitals. Its facilities have been greatly extended in recent years, although wartime buildings are still much in evidence. The Hospital is due to be downsized so the main hospital will be at Southmead. The hospital has extensive grounds which would be sold off were this to happen. There is however a Save Frenchay Hospital campaign that is very popular and is fronted by Steve Webb who is the Member of Parliament for the Northavon constituency that includes Frenchay. Its main arguments are that there is massive possibilty for expansion unlike at the Southmead site and that emergency access is easier due to it's proximity to the motorway exit and the traffic is not as bad as that in Southmead.
