Encyclopedia > Frespañol

Frespañol, is a portmanteau of the words "Français" and "Español", which mean French and Spanish. A portmanteau (plural: portmanteaux or portmanteaus) is a word that is formed by combining both sounds and meanings from two words. ...

This "language" is a mixture between French and Spanish, almost always in speech, but may be used in writing occasionally. Frespañol is used when a speaker of French and Spanish cannot find adequate vocabulary in one language to communitcate, so end up using some of both languages.

Most commonly used in Canada by French speaking people when learning Spanish because the two are very similar - sometimes the speaker is unaware that they are speaking in Frespañol, especially if they are not Francophone.

Examples: (Spanish in italics, French in bold)

  • Yo tengo les deux — I have them both.
  • Combien d'anos hay? — How many years old am I?
