The district was created in 1938 as the successor of the Oberamt Freudenstadt which dates back to 1806. In 1973 it was merged with the majority of the neighboring district Horb, and some small parts of the districts Wolfach and Hechingen.
Geography
The district is located in the middle part of the Black Forest mountains. The river Neckar flows through the southeast of the district.
Coat of arms
The coat of arms displays a capercaillie, which once was quite common in the area. The colors yellow and black are chosen as they are the colors of Württemberg.
The main house was the first grand hotel of Freudenstadt, the Black Forest hotel, which opened its doors in the year 1879, at the same time of the opening of the railway.
The hotel was confiscated for the high command west of the general Dollmann in the 2nd World War and later used as a standby military hospital.
Duke Friedrich of Wurttemberg let the town Freudenstadt be built as a plan town of the renaissance in the form of a mill game by his master constructor Heinrich Schlickhardt.
