Friars Point is a town located in Coahoma County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,480.


Friars Point was the birthplace of Conway Twitty.


Geography

Friars Point is located at 34°21'58" North, 90°38'13" West (34.366151, -90.637023)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.0 km˛ (1.1 mi˛). 2.9 km˛ (1.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.75% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,480 people, 476 households, and 348 families residing in the town. The population density is 510.2/km˛ (1,324.0/mi˛). There are 508 housing units at an average density of 175.1/km˛ (454.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 5.95% White, 93.85% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.14% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 476 households out of which 42.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.3% are married couples living together, 39.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.11 and the average family size is 3.68.


In the town the population is spread out with 38.7% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 15.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 79.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 68.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $17,750, and the median income for a family is $19,500. Males have a median income of $22,386 versus $16,898 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,769. 44.0% of the population and 38.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 53.4% of those under the age of 18 and 27.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
