History

Frick ISA was founded by Henry Clay Frick in 1927, as a training school for teachers. In 1983 it became a middle school, but was in Dilworth. It moved to the Oakland site 3 years late in 1986.

IBMYP

Frick currently is using an IBMYP curriculum. IBMYP stands for International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. The IBMYP website can be found here: IBMYP The IBMYP is a curriculum that tries to teach 11-16 year old students about the world, and the responsibilities required as an adult. They implement extra-curricular activities into the school program. They added a new feature called the S.A.C.K. (Service, Action, Community, Knowledge) book. In the book, the students must reach the goal of 10 hours of Community Service, 10 hours of action (sports, etc.), and an additional 10 hours of Creativity (art, etc.). The IBMYP coordinator this year is Madame Smith, who was a french teacher there for a number of years before taking her new position. She also works at Schenley High School, as the IBMYP coordinator there. Schenley High School is a public school in North Oakland, the cultural center of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. ...

Poems

The principal requires that all sixth graders to memorize these poems by the first month. Seventh and eight graders are required to know them from the start, as they would have known them the previous year. Mr. Walters sometimes gives tests for each class to see who has the poems memorized and who doesn't. Here are the poems:

What Are Excuses?
Excuses are symbols of nothingness,
They build bridges to nowhere,
Those who use these tools always, are masters of nothing.
Wasting Time
I have only just a minute,
Only sixty seconds in it,
Forced upon me, can't refuse it,
Didn't seek it, didn't choose it,
But it's up to me to use it, I must suffer if I lose it,
Give account if I abuse it, Just a tiny little minute,
But Eternity is in it.
Whatever You Do
Whatever you do in life,
Do it so well,
That no one living, no one dead,
Or no one yet to be born,
Can do it any better.
