Storyline

You have two tasks in the game. You have to find a safe sanctuary (you pick up the Sanctuary Cross and place it in a location to make it a sanctuary) where Jason cannot go and then persuade your friends to gather there. If they get bored or Jason enters they will leave. The problem is that Jason is a normal player moving around the game until he attacks or is attacked. Before Jason attacks, the player is warned so they can take action. You play as different characters that all have different levels of strength, panic and sanity. Jason always attacks the character with the highest panic rating. Scattered around the playing area are ten weapons you can pick up and use.

Gameplay

The general premise of Friday the 13th is to protect the 15 children in the lake cabins from harm. Jason Voorhees stalks the camp, looking for victims, and is the player's primary threat. In-between encounters with Jason, the player navigates one of six camp counselors around the camp, fending off zombies, wolves, birds, and other enemies while trying to find a way to permanently defeat him.

The game begins with a map of Camp Crystal Lake, and the player has six camp counselors with whom they will protect the children. Each counselor begins in a different cabin at camp. There are 3 male and 3 female counselors, each with a different set of strengths and weaknesses. For example, while Debbie cannot jump as high as Mark or run as fast as Crissy, she can row through Crystal Lake rather quickly, and has an advantage some counselors don't. Other counselors have different combinations of varying strangths in running, jumping, and rowing, so knowing which counselor excels at what is a key strategy to surviving.

The object of the game is to confront Jason and defeat him before he kills either all of the children or all of the counselors. As Jason roams the camp, the player is tasked with arming the counselors and exploring the camp to better preparing to defend themselves against Jason and the other enemies appearing in the camp. Clues to finding the more powerful weapons and items are hidden in the large cabins surrounding the camp. When the player lights each of the fireplaces in the large cabins, a note will appear which tells the player where to locate a torch, one of the more powerful and effective weapons in the game.

Eventually, Jason will attack, and when he does, either the icon for the counselors or the children will flash. The player will then have 60 seconds to fend Jason off of his target. As the timer counts down, Jason will either begin depleting the counselor's health or killing children. If the timer expires, the alert will cancel, but either the counselor who was being attack will be dead, or 5 children will have been killed. If he is attacking a counselor, the player may either guide their current counselor to the cabin where Jason is attacking, or switch to the threatened counselor by entering an unoccupied small cabin and manually switching to them. If the children are being attacked, the player must guide a counselor through the lake to the kids' cabin. On the way, zombies, crows, and even Jason himself will attack. Jason cannot be hit or avoided in the lake.

Once the player has reached a cabin Jason is occupying, they must search the cabin by looking each direction in each room of the cabin until Jason appears. When he attacks, he will move along two planes of movement, one within striking range and one away from the player. He will only attack when he is on the front plane, but the player can hit him on either. Jason will attack the player with whatever weapon he is currently attack by swinging up-close. The player can move left and right on a separate plane, but in order to avoid taking large amounts of damage, and to a greater extent, dying, the player must dodge Jason's blows by ducking left or right. The fight does not end until either the counselor runs out of stamina and dies, or Jason sustains enough damage and decides to flee. There are also times in which the player may encounter Jason in a large cabin with no warning outside. His presence is made known by the appearance of his stamina meter underneath the counselor's. Due to the nature of Jason's outdoor logic, leaving a cabin on land after fending off Jason will often result in an immediate outdoor battle.

There are many weapons to employ in the fight against Jason and the enemies the player will frequently encounter in the game. Each counselor begins with a rock, which does the least damage of all weapons, and which has a unique flight pattern which causes it to frequently pass over most enemies at medium range when not crouching. During the game, the player will find, in order of weapon strength, the knife, the machete, the axe, the torch, and the pitchfork. Only the torch and pitchfork can not be found on the camp paths, and must be obtained through specific actions in the game. The other weapons, excluding the rock, can be found on the camp paths by defeating enemies or jumping, or can be exchanged for Jason's last used weapon in one of the two forest bungalows. Weapons can be exchanged by entering a cabin in which another counselor resides and choosing the switch option, and aside from this method, there is no other way to reacquire the rock.

Aside from weapons, other items the player can pick up are lighters, which allow counselors to light fireplaces, creating a sanctuary from Jason, keys, which allow counselors to enter the forest bungalows and the cavern shed, flashlights, which illuminate the cavern for easier navigation, Jason's mother's sweater, which confuses Jason, and in turn, causes him to avoid the counselor wearing it and deal less damage to them, and healers, which counselors can use to heal themselves, fellow counselors when sharing a cabin, or to save a counselor from dying automatically when their stamina reaches zero. Healers are the only items a counselor can carry multiples of.

The game's length consists of 3 days at camp. Each day starts in the afternoon and progresses to night. During the day, only one enemy is present at any given time. As the day wears on, the scenery changes to reflect the time of day, and more enemies will attack the player at once. At the beginning of each day, any counselors that are still alive have their health restored. The object of each day is to reduce Jason's stamina to zero. When you successfully defeat Jason, he is shown sprawled on the floor, but inevitably gets back up to terrorize the camp again. On day 2, his fighting speed indoors fluctuates erratically, and his focus is less on children, and more on counselors. The zombies are also slightly faster. On day 3, his fighting speed indoors no longer fluctuates, and he moves at full speed constantly. He will almost cease to attack children, and will attack counselors on a very frequent basis. Also, the zombies will be much faster than before, and almost impossible to outrun even with fast counselors. If the player manages to defeat Jason a third time, Jason is again shown sprawled out and the player is congratulated for defeating him and beating the game, but Jason sits up once again. The game does not continue after this point, however.

Trivia

  • The version on the Nintendo Entertainment System is one of the only video games of the NES era to actually declare to players, most possibly children, that, upon losing all characters, he or she, and his/her friends (the other characters), have died. In the event that all of the counselers die, the game over screen exactly says, "YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER." This was different, as most games would use terms such as "defeated," or "destroyed." If the player gets a game over due to Jason killing all of the kids, the game over screen instead says, "JASON WIPED OUT THE KIDS. GAME OVER."
  • Video game magazine Nintendo Power included the NES game in the list of the 10 Worst NES Games of All Time.
  • This game was reviewed by the Angry Video Game Nerd, who noted that it's day-to-night transition was a much more favorable feature over how the feature worked in Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest.
