The documentary But I was a Girl: The Story of Frieda Belinfante addresses this question through the amazing life story of Freida Belinfante, a woman who confronts the most difficult and seemingly insurmountable obstacles in an effort to possess a sense of her true self.
Born in 1905 in the Netherlands, Belinfante begins her story by saying her mother wanted a boy, "but I was a girl." From a very young age, she is made conscious of social gender roles, although, Belinfante never allows them to dictate the direction of her life.
Belinfante decides that she is not going down without a fight and joins the resistance, forges identification papers, and for three months disguises herself as a man. Near the end of the war, she escapes to Switzerland and leaves Europe in 1947.
