History

Friedrichsdorf was founded in 1687 as a result of the persecution of Huguenots in France. Millions of people fled from France; Landgraf Friedrich II granted them asylum with the words, "I would rather sell my silver than to turn away these poor people". These refugees founded Friedrichsdorf, naming the town after their benefactor. The Huguenots brought flannel and stockings with them from France; both of these rapidly spread to other areas.
