Encyclopedia > Fuchu

Fuchu is the name of several places in Japan:

  • Fuchu City, Tokyo Prefecture
  • Fuchu City, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Fuchu Town, Hiroshima Prefecture

As of 2004, this is the only case that two Japanese cities share the exactly same name. Although some other cities, like Kashima and Kashima or Yamagata and Yamagata, share common names in alphabets, they are distinctive in Japanese letters.

Historically, Kita-hiroshima was once Hiroshima (sharing the same name with Hiroshima) before it was renamed immediately after its promotion to a city. Similar events happen on Kita-ibaraki, Higashi-yamato, and others.
