Fujiwara no Kamatari (藤原鎌足, 614–669 A.D.) was the founder of the Fujiwara clan in Japan. His clan in birth was the Nakatomi. He was son of Nakatomi no Mikeko, and his name in birth was Nakatomi no Kamatari (中臣鎌足). He received the surname Fujiwara from Emperor Tenji of Japan just prior to dying.
He was a frined and supporter of the Prince Nakanooe, later the Emperor Tenji. In 645 Prince Nakanooe and Kamatari made a coup d'etat in the court. They slew Soga no Emishi who had a strong influence to the Empress Kogyoku. During his life Kamatari supported the Emperor Tenji. The Emperor gave him the highest rank Taishokukan and a new clan name, Fujiwara as honors.
Fujiwarano Fuhito (藤原不比等: 659–720) was a powerful member of the imperial court of Japan during the Asuka and Nara periods.
Second son of FujiwaranoKamatari (or, according to one theory, of Emperor Tenji), he had sons by two women, and those sons were the founders of the four principal lineages of the Fujiwara clan: the South, North, Ceremonial, and Capital lineages.
After his death, Kasuga shrine, the main temple of the Fujiwara clan was settled near to Kofuku-ji in 768.
