Fulton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 11,642. The county seat is Salem. Fulton County was formed on December 21, 1842 and named for William Fulton, the last governor of the Arkansas Territory.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,607 km˛ (620 mi˛). 1,601 km˛ (618 mi˛) of it is land and 6 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,642 people, 4,810 households, and 3,511 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km˛ (19/mi˛). There are 5,973 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.67% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,810 households out of which 27.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.40% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.83.


In the county the population is spread out with 22.80% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64, and 20.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $25,529, and the median income for a family is $29,952. Males have a median income of $22,213 versus $18,066 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,712. 16.30% of the population and 12.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.10% of those under the age of 18 and 12.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Fulton County Fair - Arkansas (802 words)
Records show that the Fulton County Fair Association was formed and incorporated by the State of Arkansas on September 17, 1919.
In 1985 the Fulton County Fair Association purchased 10 acres of land from Ronald and Gail Plumlee adjoining the Civic Center and expanded the fairgrounds to 20 acres.
Fulton County and individuals donated labor to construct a 2000 seat arena and concession stand where the truck and tractor pull and bull riding, and rodeos were held.
