Encyclopedia > Functional decomposition

Functional decomposition of engineering is a method for analyzing engineered systems. The basic idea is to try to divide a system in such a way that each block of the block diagram can be described without an "and" or "or" in the description.

This exercise forces each part of the system to have a pure function. When a system is composed of pure functions, they can be reused, or replaced. A usual side-effect is that the interfaces between blocks become simple and generic. Since the interfaces usually become simple, it is easier to replace a pure function with a related, similar function. A function is part of an answer to a question about why some object or process occurred in a system that evolved or was designed with some goal. ...

For example, say that one needs to make a stereo system. One might functionally decompose this into speakers, amplifier, a tape deck and a front panel. Later, when a different model needs an audio CD, it can probably fit the same interfaces. Stereo or stereophony generally refers to dual-channel sound recording and sound reproduction – sound that contains data for more than one speaker simultaneously. ... Closeup of a loudspeaker driver A loudspeaker is a device which converts an electrical signal into sound. ... An amplifier is a device which changes a small movement into a larger movement. ... In general, a tape recorder, tape deck, or tape machine is any device that records a fluctuating signal by moving a strip of magnetic tape across a tape head, which is a strong electromagnet. ... CD may stand for: compact disc Canadian Forces Decoration cash dispenser (at least used in Japan) CD LPMud Driver Centrum-Demokraterne (Centre Democrats of Denmark) certificate of deposit České dráhy (Czech Railways) Chad (NATO country code) Chalmers Datorförening (computer club of the Chalmers University of Technology) a 1960s Panhard race...

This process is powerful when applied to software engineering. Software engineering (SE) is the profession concerned with creating and maintaining software applications by applying technologies and practices from computer science, project management, engineering, application domains, and other fields. ...

Mobile Components to Manage the Heterogeneous Internet (4139 words)
Functionality distribution in current network management techniques is addressed by enhancing the capabilities of the agents or by introducing new managers at intermediate points [3].
Functional components in our scheme are generated as a result of "functional decomposition" which involves recursively dividing the system's overall functionality to obtain smaller functions.
After we identify the functional set for the alarm surveillance function via a functional tree as shown in figure 4 and table 1, we deal with the two heterogeneous device types by defining a set of policies that specify the attributes to be managed.
