Coat-of-arms
Funen County's coat-of-arms shows three connected gold hop leaves on a field of red, which represent the three former counties of Odense, Svendborg and Assens. The choice of hop leaves comes from Funen native Hans Christian Andersen's song "I Danmark er jeg født" ("In Denmark I was born"), where he refers to Funen as "Æblegård og humlehave" (Apple farm and hop garden). Heraldry is the science and art of describing coats-of-arms, also referred to as armorial bearings or simply as arms. Its origins lie in the need to distinguish participants in battles or jousts and to describe the various devices they carried or painted on their shields. ...
