A "Fungo" is a fly ball hit by a player who throws the ball up to himself usually using what is called a "fungo bat". A fungo bat is a specially designed bat used by baseball and softball coaches for practice purposes. It is not designed to hit thrown or pitched balls but rather is intended to hit balls tossed in the air. Typical fungo bats are 35-37 inches long and weigh 17-22 ounces (while full-size baseball bats can weigh 30 ounces or more). Coaches hit many balls during fielding practice, and the light weight allows the coach to hit balls repeatedly with high accuracy.
