Funkstown is a town located in Washington County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 983.


Geography

Funkstown is located at 39°36'33" North, 77°42'27" West (39.609096, -77.707527)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 983 people, 441 households, and 253 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,116.3/km˛ (2,880.3/mi˛). There are 464 housing units at an average density of 526.9/km˛ (1,359.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.76% White, 0.61% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.51% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 441 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.6% are non-families. 33.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.81.


In the town the population is spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $35,278, and the median income for a family is $45,197. Males have a median income of $30,438 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,544. 10.4% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Funkstown, Maryland (455 words)
Nevertheless, the community incorporated as a municipality in 1840 under the name “Funkstown,” a shortening of Funck’s Jerusalem Town, the name by which the community had come to be known early in the 19th century.
The battle that was fought around the town and in the vicinity of today’s town park resulted in 479 soldiers killed or wounded and the use of residences in Funkstown as hospitals.
A major element of life in Funkstown in the early part of the 20th century was the electric trolley.

Jacob Funck was a Washington County Representative to the Maryland House of Delegates, 1785-1787.
The Civil War left its devastation on Funkstown when on Lee's retreat from Gettysburg a battle by General J.E.B. Stuart against General John Buford was fought on the east edge of town.
In 1921, the Funkstown Memorial was erected at the main square.
