Plot
Squidward Tentacles has had enough of SpongeBob SquarePants' incessant laughter, so he tricks his neighbor into believing that SpongeBob has a laugh-related illness. According to the made-up disease, if SpongeBob laughs one more time in the next 24 hours, his laugh box will explode and he will never laugh or giggle again. For the rest of the day, SpongeBob fights every single urge to chuckle. The next morning, SpongeBob discovers that he completely lost the ability to laugh. Now utterly grief stricken, all SpongeBob can do is cry his eyes out! Squidward finally confesses to sadly sponge, as the weeping was more annoying than SpongeBob's giggles and after Squidward admits everything, SpongeBob laughs to see it was a good joke and when Squidward laughs too much, he is taken to the hospital. Later, it is revealed that Squidward has lost his laugh and the doctor points out that someone has given him half of their laugh box. It isn't Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks or Eugene H. Krabs, it was SpongeBob. Squidward starts to laugh like SpongeBob and runs out of the building.
Trivia/Goofs - This episode was originally titled "Unfunny Pants", but was later changed to "Funny Pants".
- After Squidward's laughbox was replaced by part of SpongeBob's, he has SpongeBob's laugh. However, after this episode Squidward has his regular laugh.
- After Patrick slips on a banana peel several times, he says "Okay, right foot first..." but he actually picks up his left leg.
- This is the first time Squidward refers to Spongebob as "Squarepants". Except on the episode The Lost Mattress.
- gag:Sandy tells Patrick and Spongebob a joke. While Spongebob's laughing, they get creeped out a slowly walk away.
- The title card looks similar to the one for Squirrel Jokes.
- The episode is similar to South Park episode How to Eat with Your Butt, where Eric Cartman believed he had a "funny fuse" and he cannot laugh anymore.
