United States Department of Agriculture Plants Profile: Furcraea
The genus Furcraea is closely related to Agave, but it is a much smaller group: 20 species plus an additional variety are listed in a 2001 write-up on the genus.
Furcraeas differ, however, in having pendulous flowers, which are always white or greenish-white.
The large leaves of Furcraea selloa are green (edged with yellow in the case of our variegated specimen), sword-shaped, and armed with sharp teeth along the edges.
The spread and increase of the furcraea, however, is guaranteed.
The furcraea has been in cultivation in the gardens since 1894, so despite the magnificence of its flowering, the event initself is not extraordinary.
The furcraea is a noble foliage plant, whose large, glaucous rosettes greatly enhance both the exotic feel of the garden and the natural colours and contrasts of surrounding plants.
