The Further Education and Training Awards Council is the authority that grants extra-university further education awards in Ireland, these awards have not yet been finalised but are been so by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland.

The Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) is the legal successor to the National Council for Educational Awards and awards higher education awards in Ireland in the extra-university system; HETAC was created in 2001 under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, 1999 (Section 21).
The National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA) was founded in 1972, on an ad-hoc basis and awarded the first National Certificates that year at five Regional Technical Colleges.
The providers of awards which lead to HETAC awards are called "recognised institutions", and they are recognised under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, 1999 (Section 24).

HETAC (the Higher Education and Training Awards Council) was established by the Government on 11 June 2001, under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999.
HETAC is the qualifications awarding body for third-level educational and training institutions outside the university sector.
FETAC (the Further Education and Training Awards Council) was set up on a statutory basis on 11 June 2001 by the Minister for Education and Science, under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, 1999.
