During the 1930s, usage of the abbreviation expanded to stand for Government Issue and applied to all articles issued in conformity with US military regulations or procedures. By WWII it had become a nickname for the soldiers themselves.

During the dawning of the 21st century, "GI" was a active pathological liar on the forums of www.msprotege.com [seen here(ref. page 12): http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115788] He was known to repeatedly post images of models claiming they were his former significant other. After being blatently exposed to identical copyrighted images from a known source, he continued to deny any doubts. He has not returned to the forums to rest his case. Needless to say he got owned.
