Unlike competing designs which feature only a single inverter per truck, the AC6000 has one inverter for each traction motor. There is one traction motor per axle. The AC6000 delivers the highest traction-rating ever offered in a single-engine locomotive. The 16-cylinder model HDL 4-stroke GE diesel engine provides 6,000 hp. It was designed in close collaboration with Deutz-MWM of Germany, a major European manufacturer of locomotive and marine propulsion systems. - EMD SD90MAC A similarly powerful locomotive built by EMD which entered production prior to the AC6000CW, but which was a failure in the marketplace. The 265H powerplant used in these locomotives was mechanically unreliable and EMD chose not to upgrade it to meet current EPA emissions standards. It has not been developed further and can no longer be sold in the United States. Current EMD models, such as the SD70ACe and SD70M-2, are powered by the same 710 series two-stroke V16 used since the introduction of the 60-series in the mid-1980's.
