Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) (EC 2.3.2.2 (http://us.expasy.org/cgi-bin/nicezyme.pl?2.3.2.2)) is a liver enzyme. Its level in the blood may be tested for, as an elevated level may indicate an abnormality in the liver, though this can be caused by a number of conditions.


Its levels are increased in chronic and acute alcohol abuse.

CEA, alkaline phosphatase, and GGT used together are useful markers for hepatic metastasis from breast and colon primaries.
GGT is the test for cholestasis during or immediately following pregnancy.
When GGT and alkaline phosphatase are both high, but one is disproportionately elevated, suspect the possibility of drug-induced cholestasis (including alcoholism if it is GGT which is much higher).
