Album history

GHV2 was released exactly eleven years after The Immaculate Collection and featured Madonna's biggest hits of the 90s, ranging from 1992's "Erotica" to 2001's "What It Feels Like for a Girl". But, unlike its predecessor it did not contain any new songs. Madonna has answered this, stating that she wanted a hits compilation only with past hits. The Immaculate Collection is Madonnas first Greatest Hits album and eighth recording, released on November 13, 1990. ... Erotica was the first single from Madonnas 1992 album Erotica. ... What It Feels Like for a Girl is a song by American singer Madonna from her 2000 album Music. ...

Many of the songs on GHV2 were edited down from their original studio versions. Like The Immaculate Collection, there was not space for many other popular singles released, such as: "This Used to Be My Playground", "Rain", "I'll Remember", "You'll See" (or the Spanish version "Verás"), "You Must Love Me", "Nothing Really Matters" and "American Pie". In an interview with BBC's Jo Whiley Madonna said about the selection of the GHV2 tracks: "I only wanted songs that I could listen to 5 times in a row". The hit song "American Pie" was excluded as a "punishment" because Madonna regretted putting it on the Music album. "It was something a certain record company executive twisted my arm into doing, but it didn't belong on the album so now it's being punished", she said. There was still enough space on the CD for two songs, however, and some fans are unhappy that the Hot 100 #1 hit "This Used To Be My Playground" or even the Hot 100 #2 hit "I'll Remember" were excluded. To avoid an "explicit lyrics" label, an edit of "Human Nature" was included that replaces the line "I'm not your bitch, don't hang your shit on me" with "It's human nature". Human Nature was the fourth and final single from Madonnas 1994 album Bedtime Stories. ...

While there were no new songs, a promo-only megamix was used to promote the album, the Thunderpuss GHV2 Megamix which mixed "Don't Tell Me", "Erotica", "Secret", "Frozen", "What It Feels Like For A Girl", "Take A Bow", "Deeper And Deeper", "Music" and "Ray of Light" (in that order). The coverwork does not offer many new photos; the cover picture is from a photo shoot for the Drowned World Tour, in 2001 by Regan Cameron. The logo in the right corner says "Madonna" and "GHV2". The Japanese letters is the result of typing 'Madonna' in an English keyboard while using a Japanese font, here it is why the word does not have any real significance in Japanese. The word "GHV2" can also be seen in Madonna's eye. Kevin Reagan contributed artwork to the CD's inner sleeve. The 2001 Drowned World Tour was Madonnas first world-tour in eight years, following her 1993 The Girlie Show Tour. ... Regan Cameron was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. ...

A special edition of GHV2, featuring the same tracklisting but some additional art work was released in December 2001.

Originally, GHV2 was to be called The Second Coming and had "You'll See" in place of "Drowned World". The tracklisting was also much more random than the final. However, the former song was dropped for the latter and the name changed to GHV2, and the tracklisting was slightly chronologised.

AbsoluteMadonna.com - GHV2 (959 words)
What saved Madonna, and therefore saves GHV2, was turning her attention to personal matters in the late '90s.
A hard-won role in Evita and new motherhood seemed to turn Madonna's focus inward, and she began to explore two seemingly contradictory impulses: to write reflective, personal songs and to dive headfirst into electronic music.
The Orbit tracks included on GHV2 -- "The Power of Goodbye", "Frozen", "Ray of Light", "Drowned World/Substitute for Love", "Beautiful Stranger" -- are a testament to his ability to use gadgets and electronic wizardry not to alienate listeners, but to draw them in.
