The GMB is a generaltrade union in the United Kingdom, and has more than 700,000 members. The GMB originates from a merger of four smaller trade unions in 1924, named the National Union of General and Municipal Workers. After many more mergers, it became known as the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trade Union in 1982, from the initials of which its present name is derived.
Many members suffer bullying and harassment at work, poor safety, discrimination and the GMBunion can has over 115 years experience in representing workers.

Now, the GMB are not allowed to come to meet the new intake for the first 6 months - by which time the company's own culture will have been impressed upon the employees, some of whom may not be aware of the role unions play in securing better pay and conditions for them.
Instead of unions, Asda puts in place groups which it calls 'colleague circles', where workers are invited to air their grievances and put forward suggestions for improvement, but management are under no obligation to act upon anything the workers say.
GMB member Mohamed Adnam Ali an employee in the Hulme store of Asda Wal-Mart in Manchester was suspended on 27 March 2006 by management after he supplied two GMB application forms to two work colleagues during his break.
