All Hands - August 2001 - It Isn't easy being green (1667 words)
Guantanamo Bay, or "GTMO" as the locals call it, is home to many endangered or threatened species, including the hawksbill turtle, the Cuban rock iguana, and a host of other plants and animals that are native only to the area in and around the base.
As is elsewhere in the Caribbean, one of the main threats to iguanas at GTMO is the large population of feral cats that eat an untold number of baby iguanas each year.
The researchers are doing intricate mapping of GTMO shores, taking into account the slope and the density of the sand to determine which species are best suited to which beach.
GTMO (455 words)
I finally found some photos of GTMO (pronounced Git-Mo) that were taken around 1985 or so.
The scenes in the movie that were supposed to be GTMO were actually Camp Pendleton, CA.
The beaches of GTMO are not spectacular, but the diving is. The reefs are virtually untouched and there are some magnificent formations.
