He was a member of the Kentucky house of representatives in 1797 and the Kentucky State senate1816 –1820. In 1816 he was elected lieutenant-governor and became governor on the death of Gov. George Madison (1817) serving the remaining years of Madison’s term.[2] Slaughter's governorship was complicated by the financial panic of 1819 and he spent the majority of his term working to stabilize that state's economy.
