History Gahanna or Gehenna, is derived from the Greek geenna or the Hebrew hinnom, the Valley of Hinnom, is a deep narrow glen south of Jerusalem, where the Jews offered their children to the god Molech (2 Kings 23:10; Jeremiah 7:31, 19:2-5), as seen in Jeremiah this practice was strongly condemned by the prophets. Later it became a refuge for all putrefying material which included, but was not limited to, bodies of “criminals” not permitted a proper burial, raw human waste, or any other matter which defiled the city. Fires were kept burning there in attempts to keep the stench down due to it’s necessary close proximity to Jerusalem; and thus became a symbol of the place of everlasting punishment, especially with its accounts of eternal burning fire to which Christ referred to when he said, "the fire is not quenched." For this reason the valley was deemed to be accursed, and "Gehenna" therefore soon became a figurative equivalent for "hell." Gahanna, the suburb of Columbus, was once the dump sight (landfill) for the surrounding areas, which is likely where the correlation to geena (or gehenna) comes from. This landfill was/is located on Taylor Rd but has since been capped, with plans in the work(s) to develop the space into a golf course. The “official spin” on how the area got its name is that it’s “…from a local Native American word (one which no one eludes as to what it may be, and of course it’s conveniently unverifiable as there are no local Natives left in the area.) describing the meeting of three creeks, as the community is located at the confluence of branches of Big Walnut Creek”. While it’s understandable that aspiring developers, local business owners, and/or municipal members would not want to have their area associated with “a pit of burning stench comparable to hell”, their aspirations in no way negate the truth about the origins of the areas name, and we should never allow them to steal (re-write) our history to suite themselves, lest we lose something very precious indeed. It is no secret to the locals of the area that the current corporation, GAHANNA, has an overzealous, if not bordering on harassing group of revenue collection officers (POLICE) in their activities of issuing citations. This being evidenced in part by the disproportionately large percentage(s) of income these activities account for in their CAFR (comprehensive annual financial report) as it surpasses what they receive in taxes. In fact, they have done so well at extracting revenue from the locals through their "CITY ORDINANCES", which they write, that recently (2006) they were awarded a STATE grant (kind of like a promotion for municipalities…or as it says, an award) enabling them to expand their revenue collecting activities onto Columbus’ 270 bypass. Gahanna Plantation was founded by John Clark of Ross County, Ohio as an 800 acre (3.2 km²) farm. Its population grew over time, and it was placed under corporate control incorporated in 1881. The first mayor/CEO of GAHANNA was L. John Neiswander. It is important to differentiate between GAHANNA, which is a fictional entity (corporation) operating under “color of law” (look that one up in the law books), and that of Gahanna, which references a geographical locale where a group of men and women have decided to become associated with each other through their proximity of habitation.
