Parker announced in November 2005 she would attempt to get on the ballot for U.S. Senate. Her petition drive officially started on January 1, 2006, the first day possible, on a live morning radio news broadcast in Charlottesville, Virginia. Over the next five months she personally spoke with over 100,000 Virginians. Parker also collected petition signatures with each of the 11 U.S. House of Representatives candidates endorsed by the Independent Greens of Virginia. On May 23, 2006, the Virginia state board of elections confirmed Parker's place on the ballot, following the petition drive in which the Independent Greens collected "over 20,000 petition signatures for Gail for Rail," according to Carey Campbell, State Chairman of the Independent Greens of Virginia.
