Gaines is a village located in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 366. The village is within Gaines Township.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 366 people, 143 households, and 98 families residing in the village. The population density is 471.0/km˛ (1,205.5/mi˛). There are 155 housing units at an average density of 199.5/km˛ (510.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 93.72% White, 1.91% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.37% from other races, and 2.46% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 143 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the village the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $44,375, and the median income for a family is $46,250. Males have a median income of $50,625 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,790. 10.3% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.6% of those under the age of 18 and 18.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
