Gaius Lutatius Catulus was a Roman leader in the First Punic War. He was elected as a consul in 241 BC, a novus homo. He led a Roman fleet into victory over Carthage in the battle of the Aegates Islands. This was the decisive battle of the conflict. To celebrate his victory, he built a temple to Juturna in Campus Martius, in the area currently known as Largo di Torre Argentina. Gaius Lutatius Catulus, Roman commander during the First Punic War, consul 242 B.C. He was sent with a fleet of zoo ships to Sicilian waters, and almost without opposition occupied the harbours of Lilybaeum and Drepanum.
