Galax is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is bounded to the east by Carroll County and to the west by Grayson County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,837.


Geography

Galax is located at 36°39'52" North, 80°55'12" West (36.664675, -80.920275)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.3 km˛ (8.2 mi˛). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,837 people, 2,950 households, and 1,843 families residing in the city. The population density is 320.8/km˛ (830.9/mi˛). There are 3,217 housing units at an average density of 150.9/km˛ (391.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 86.11% White, 6.26% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 5.51% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 11.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,950 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $28,236, and the median income for a family is $36,832. Males have a median income of $24,013 versus $18,393 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,447. 18.6% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 21.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Galax is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Bureau_of_Economic_Analysis combines the city of Galax with neighboring Carroll county for statistical purposes.
Although the entire Appalachian region is known for its music, the region around Mount Airy, North Carolina and Galax, Virginia is one of the few areas of the United States where this music has remained strongest, even among young people.
Galax Dulcimers (398 words)
The GALAX dulcimer is a form of lap dulcimer which was developed in the vicinity of Galax, Virginia.
Galaxes are lozenge-shaped, with deeper sides than most other dulcimers, usually 2 1/2 to 3 inches (Kudzupatch Galaxes are usually made 2 5/8 inches deep.) The instrument is strung with four strings, all tuned to the same note.
The Galax is sometimes built with a false back, which rests on the player's lap, freeing the actual back to resonate with the vibrations of the strings.
