"Galaxie" is a 1995 song by the alternative rock band Blind Melon. It is one of the best compositions of their short career, and one of the best songs of the 90's. It was also the first single from Blind Melon's misunderstood second and final album, Soup. it is a more Grunge/Hard Rock- type song as opposed to the more Southern Rock/Jam Band songs from their first album. Shannon Hoon’s poetic lyrics seem to deal with a troubled relationship, as shown by the “And you’re leaving me, you're leaving me with a hated identity” lines, as well as the “I keep on a-comin’ here” and “I’m never really sure if you’ll take what I’m saying the right way” parts of the chorus. At Blind Melon’s concert at the metro, he introduced the song by saying in a quavering voice, “This is a song about…my first love.” However, like many of Hoon’s lyrics, the meaning of such trippy lines as “But I'm not appalled or afraid verbal pocket play, Is as discreet as I can muster up to be” are a mystery. However, by “his first love” Hoon could be talking about the Ford Galaxie, a car he considered part of his identity. The song is propelled by a powerful ascending riff which opens the song and then gives way to the quiet, tension building verse, with Hoon singing in his angelic, Janis Joplin-like voice, an important part of every Blind Melon song. The short “and you’re leaving me” part leads into the more folksy/hippie chorus, which references a Cadillac that he has “sittin’ in the back” but ends with Hoon saying “I’m more at home in my Galaxie“, possibly meaning That he was trying to show the girl that he loved money isn’t everything, because the Galaxie is a much cheaper car than the Cadilac. The riff then comes back in after Hoon sings this line. The song ends with Hoon pleading “No it isn't me” over power chords before he sings the Galaxie line, and the song ends. The song takes the same sad, sorrowful tone as most Blind Melon’s best work, becoming an amazing, anthemic, emotional release of a song. Image File history File links Nocover. ...
