Galena Park is a city located in Harris County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,592.

Galena Park is located at 29°44'20" North, 95°14'14" West (29.738928, -95.237211)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.9 km˛ (5.0 mi˛). 12.9 km˛ (5.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,592 people, 3,054 households, and 2,461 families residing in the city. The population density is 819.6/km˛ (2,124.1/mi˛). There are 3,207 housing units at an average density of 248.1/km˛ (643.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 63.35% White, 7.65% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 24.35% from other races, and 3.68% from two or more races. 69.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,054 households out of which 46.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.47 and the average family size is 3.92.


In the city the population is spread out with 33.8% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 16.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $31,660, and the median income for a family is $34,702. Males have a median income of $29,814 versus $21,172 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,207. 25.4% of the population and 21.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
