Gallicolumba is a genus of ground-dwelling doves which occur in the rainforests on the Philippines, Indonesia, and in the Pacific region. This include the Ground-doves from the Pacific islands like Vanuatu and the Bleeding-hearts known from Mindanao and Luzon. The Bleeding-heart received its name from a vivid-red patch on the breast which looks like a wounding caused by a dagger stab. Their diet consists of fruits. Currently there are 20 known species. Many of them are either extinct or threatened due to habitat destruction, invasive species, or overhunting. In addition there are several unknown species which became extinct early during the human settlement of Polynesia. These species are only known by subfossil remains. Their taxonomic affiliation is uncertain but due to the similar morphology of their bones they were classified into this genus too
