Elections in Ireland.
Galway or Chathair na Gaillimhe, as it is known in Gaelic, grew from a small fishing village first settled over six thousand years ago around the estuary of the river, a river traditionally called Abhainn na Gaillimhe (the Galway river) after Galvia, a mythological princess said to have drowned in its waters.
Galway acts as the adminstration capital of the region, operating three hospitals, a univeristy, a regional technical college, government departments, and is the regional center for retail.
Galway is networked by a good system of roads which have been recently improved and modernized in keeping with the increased traffic flow to and from the city.
Galway (official Irish name: Gaillimh) is the main city in the province of Connacht in Ireland and capital of County Galway.
Galway remained mostly loyal to the English crown during the Gaelic resurgence as a matter of survival, yet by 1642 the city allied itself with the Catholic Confederation of Kilkenny during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
In the General Election of 2002, GalwayWest was considered a 'swing constituency' due to the battle between Fianna Fáil's Senator Margaret Cox and the Progressive Democrats' Noel Grealish.
