What I know is that when Saul(Paul)left Tarsus to go to Jerusalem he went to school in the most impressive school. And to him, he sat in the most impressive classroom in the entire Jewish world. His esteemed teacher was the rabbi Gamaliel, grandson of the great Hillel--names of great importance in the history of Judaism. So highly revered was Gamaliel, the Jews referred to him as "the beauty of the law." About one thousand students populated the rabbinical college, also called the House of Interpretation during Saul's studies in Jerusalem. God would use what Saul learned at the feet of Gamaliel. "Gamaliel was clearly a remarkable man--the first to whom the title Rabban (Master) was given. He was almost liberal in comparison to many of his contemporaries. Large-hearted, wise and open-minded, Gamaliel had been raised on his grandfathers teachings. Hillel, whose words often had a remarkable similarity to the Greatest Rabboni who would ever live. A few lines from the teachings of Hillel are: "Judge not thy neighbour until thou art in his place;...my abasement is my exaltation;..he who wishes to make a name for himself loses his name;....what is unpleasant to thyself that do not to thy neighbour;..this is the whole Law, all else is but its exposition." I'm sure some of these sound familiar to you, I know they did to me. Gamaliel's purpose in life was to teach, but in particular to teach Paul which he did for 5 years. He did it with a touch of rare grace, knowledge & wisdom passed down to him. Gamaliel was Pauls' teacher for five (5) years. You can find another sample of Gamaliel's teachings in Acts 5:27-42 42

Rabbi Gamliel carried a supply of bread, Rabbi Yehoshua carried a similar amount of bread and in addition a reserve of flour.
Rabbi Gamliel was younger then Rabbi Yehoshua and it has been argued that if he was 20-25 years old, it is doubtful whether he could have had students at the time [10].
Still, this is not a strong argument, as Rabbi Gamliel II was also the hereditary Patriarch, and may have had students attached to him formally from the moment he was appointed head of the Sanhedrin.
