It began in 1965 as an amateur championship, while in 1983 it was changed to professional. Although not literally national (it is divided into North and South groups), Gamma Ethniki is considered as a national division.
Structure Three teams from 3rd division gain promotion to Beta Ethniki: the champions of each group, plus the winner of a play-off round between the second-placed teams.
