Gank is a slang word. Its most general meaning is as a jocular word for a theft. The theft does not have to be anything more than, say, taking a snack you weren't supposed to, but it could also refer to something as large as stealing a car. It is usually used in the context of a Britishism.


Amongst other definitions, Gank has also been used as a slang term for theft by force. The term was popularized in gangster rap lyrics of the late 1980s such as N.W.A's "Thugs 4 life", Priority Records, 1988 in which Eric "Eazy-E" Wright states "Gankers got the fake but you can get the real(...)". Gank is also used in relation to Player vs. Player games where a group of 2 or more people gang up and kill another player, especially if they have an unfair advantage over the person being killed, and is an abbreviation for Gang Kill. "Gank" is also a slang term referring something that is messed up or screwed up. It's commonly used for a malfunctioning or broken piece of equipment, etc. as in "My car is ganked" or "I was working on that ganked up engine" or "I love my kids but their attitude is ganked..." and so on.


The term Gank can be used in many ways. The most common is "I just got ganked" or "I just ganked that noob." Another common use is as an adjective instead of a verb. "We have homework? Thats gank."
