Ganmodoki often has some hijiki in it, but I discovered I was completely out.
The fried ganmodoki went into the seasoned soup stock, perhaps not quite long enough to get the incomparably oden-like quality of pervasive soupy richness, but just about right to bring out the freshness of the tofu.
I haven't made it recently, but it is excellent, and would probably be good as a ganmodoki as well.

Ganmodoki is sold pre-made in supermarkets, in the refrigerated section, and is usually eaten in an oden, a sort of stew of various fishcakes and such.
But store bought ganmodoki, which has the texture of a sponge, is nothing like freshly made ganmodoki.
