Encyclopedia > Gantry robot

A cartesian coordinate robot is an industrial robot whose three principal axes of control are linear (i.e. they move in a straight line rather than rotate) and are at right angles to each other. Among other advantages, this mechanical arrangement simplifies the arm solution. Cartesian coordinate robots with the horizontal member supported at both ends are sometimes called Gantry robots. They are often quite large.

Gantry robot construction and drive mechanism (4155 words)
We provide a cantilever gantry robot construction having the conventional components of a pair of elongated substantially spaced parallel rail means, bridge means spanning the rail means and movable relative to the rail means and robot means mounted on the bridge means and movable relative to the bridge means.
Robot means 80 is comprised of a fixed longitudinal support 82 which engages the bridge 60 and provides a fixed support which allows the robot head 84 to move up and down.
Robot means 130 is similar to that of the prior art in that it is comprised of a longitudinal support 132 and a robot head 134.
Portable gantry robot (6102 words)
The robot is carried on rails that are integral with the transporter and identical in size to the displaceable rail sections.
Once the robot's transfer is complete, the transfer rail section 96 automatically unlocks, the transporter 94 moves away from the overhead rail system 92 and the displaceable rail section 90 simultaneously relocates to its normal position in the overhead rail system 92.
An empty robotic transport 104 aligns and displaces a rail section 100 and the robot 110 is moved onto the transfer rail section 108 of the transporter 104 after which the transfer rail section 108 is unlocked and the lift 106 is lowered.
