Gao Qi (高旗) , the leading vocal and song-writer of Chinese rock band Overload , was born in a family with generations’ classic music background in Beijing in February 26, 1968 , whose father is a tenor, mother is a pianist. After withdrawing university, Gao Qi, as guitarist and song-writer, joined the Chines rock band “ Breath”, and performed on the first Rock Festival in China, “Beijing Modern Music Concert” in February of 1990. The band released their first Album “Breath” in Asia in 1991.



Fascinated by Heavy Metal, Gao Qi then quitted “Breath" and set up his own band “Overload” with guitarist Han Hongbin, Li Yanliang, Bassist Wang Xueke and Drummer Zhao Muyang, who were said to be the elitist musicians in China at that time.



The songs Gao Qi wrote combine western rock and Chinese literary and his performance burst the enthusiasm of both audients and players. The band built up a Thrash metal style which had attracted a large number of fans in a short time. Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music. ...



The first single of Overload “the shadow of ancestor” was recorded in the album “Rock Beijing” which was the label record of Chinese Rock in 1993. A well-known Chinese woodwind musician, is the founder and director of the Melody of Dragon, the artistic director and conductor of the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York.
In 1997 alone, Gao Hong became the first Chinese musician to be awarded an Artist Assistance Fellowship from the Minnesota State Arts Board, as well as a McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists, a Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant, and an Asian-Pacific Award from the Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans.
Gao Hong currently serves on the faculty of Metropolitan State University and MacPhail Center for the Arts, and is a roster artist for Young Audiences of Minnesota.
