Garden County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 2,292. Its county seat is Oshkosh6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,483 km˛ (1,731 mi˛). 4,414 km˛ (1,704 mi˛) of it is land and 69 km˛ (27 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.54% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,292 people, 1,020 households, and 658 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (1/mi˛). There are 1,298 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.34% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,020 households out of which 24.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 6.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.40% are non-families. 32.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.77.


In the county the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 22.70% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64, and 24.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $26,458, and the median income for a family is $32,546. Males have a median income of $21,495 versus $17,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,414. 14.80% of the population and 10.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.00% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Garden County is one of two counties in the state whose name is a direct result of the way in which early inhabitants viewed the area or intended it to become.
Garden County was established in 1909 after a successful election effort to create a new county from the northern portion of existing Deuel County.
The name "Garden" was suggested by Oshkosh real estate agents John and William Twiford because they explained that the locale was or could be the "garden spot of the west." Oshkosh itself, the county seat, dates back to 1886 when a group of settlers formed the Oshkosh Land and Cattle Company.
