Garden Island is a facility of the Royal Australian Navy in Port Jackson, Sydney. Formerly an island in the harbour, it has been connected to the mainland by the construction of a dry dock and wharves along the eastern shore of Woolloomooloo Bay.
GardenIsland navy base, still looks as it did during World War II, but the island dates back further to the First Fleet who landed at Sydney Cove, where three colonists went ashore on a small harbour island and scratched their initials into the rocks.
GardenIsland was established as a food source for the colony, on January 27, 1788, the day after the First Fleet arrived.
Another GardenIsland relic is the tiny penknife that 21-year-old able seaman William Lamshed used 60 years ago to save the lives of 29 crew from HMAS Armidale, who were torpedoed off Timor on December 1, 1942.
In NewSouthWales, some of the light stations are parklands managed by the N.S.W. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
The island is open to the public, but capacity is limited and reservations are required.
This site is in the Jervis Bay Territory, a small section of NewSouthWales transferred to the Australian Capital Territory in 1915 and administered since then by Commonwealth authorities.
